Akki Roti

Preparation Time : 20minutes Cooking Time : 25minutes Total Time : 45minutes

Akki means rice in Kannada. Akki Roti is a rice flatbread famous in Karnataka. Akki Roti is a good and healthy breakfast or dinner. Traditionally, banana leaves are used to make the roti. Alternative for banana leaf are butter paper or parchment paper or aluminum foil. Using banana leaf is a plus, it makes it more nutritious.

This was my first time (to cook as well as eat) and it came out super yummy. I did not take photos of each step as I was so excited to try it out, but now I am feeling guilty as to why I didn’t take pics.🙆‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 🙈

[will update pics when I make it next time soon]

Lastly, Akki Roti tastes good when served hot(smeared with butter or ghee) with spicy Coconut chutney or Garlic chutney.  🤤

Ingredients :

  • Rice Flour – 1 cup
  • Salt to taste
  • Carrot (grated) – 1/4 cup
  • Onion (finely chopped) – 1
  • Curry leaves (finely chopped) – 1 tsp
  • Coriander leaves (finely chopped) – 1 tsp
  • Green chilly (finely chopped) – 1 tsp
  • Water as per requirement for making dough

Instructions :

  1. Mix rice flourcarrot, onion, curry leaves, coriander leaves, green chilly and salt together in a bowl. Squeeze the mixture well, so that moisture is released.
  2. Add water little by little and make a soft and moist dough. Divide the dough into small balls and set aside.
  3. To make the roti grease the banana leaf or parchment paper with oil. If using banana leaf , use a tender leaf. If leaf is not tender, slightly heat the leaf and then grease with oil. Take a small ball and tap gently(with greased hand or wet hand) to make a thin roti using your fingers. Make a hole in the center (this helps in even cooking).
  4. Heat a tawa and turn over the banana leaf and press lightly so that roti sticks to the tawa & remove the banana leaf. Cook the roti in medium flame.
  5. Sprinkle little oil. Once the bottom is cooked, flip the roti and cook both sides.
  6. Tadda, Akki roti is ready to be served with spicy Coconut chutney or Garlic chutney.

Tips :

  • You can add vegetables of your choice, to make it more nutritious.
  • Finely chop the onions else it will be difficult to make roti as onions will come out.
