Tandoori Roti

Preparation Time: 10minutes Resting Time : 45minutes Cooking Time : 15minutes Total Time : 1hour 10minutes

Tandoori Roti is a North Indian flatbread recipe made with wheat flour using tawa on a gas top. It was traditionally made in clay ovens or Tandoor at high temperature. Here is a recipe to make yummy roti at home on a gas top or electric coil. Tandoori Roti tastes great with any curry like Paneer Butter Masala, Malai Kofta, Dum aloo, Dal Makhani and the list goes on… 🤤🤤🤤 along with yogurt or raita and pickle.🤤🤤🤤 We had roti with Paneer Butter Masala[Sorry, don’t have pic 😞🙏].

In some restaurants, Tandoori roti is made with maida too [that’s why we love it and its super soft 😝]. As we all know maida is not good for health, I made this recipe with Wheat flour and maida[added little just for the softness 😝] .

Ingredients :

  • Wheat flour – 2 cup
  • Maida – 1/4 cup
  • Baking Soda – 1/4 tsp
  • Baking powder-1/4tsp
  • Sugar -1tsp
  • Salt-1tsp
  • Curd-1/2 cup
  • Water – as per requirement for making dough
  • Oil – 1tsp
  • Finely chopped coriander leaves(optional)
  • Finely chopped Garlic (optional)
  • Butter

Instructions :

  1. Mix wheat flourmaidabaking sodabaking powder, salt and sugar together in a bowl.

2. Add curd and start kneading the dough by adding water little by little. Add 1tsp oil and knead to make a soft dough. Cover and set aside the dough for 45minutes.

3. Knead the dough for 2minutes and take a small ball. Roll the ball into a circle(slightly thick).

4. Grease the top portion of the roti with oil and garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves and garlic. This step is optional.

5. Now, invert the roti and spread little water to the plain side of the roti.

6. Now heat a tawa on medium flame and once hot, transfer the roti to the tawa with the wet side facing down. This helps the roti to stick to the pan firmly.

7. Once small bubbles start forming and the base is cooked, invert the pan and cook on direct flame until cooked uniformly. Keep moving the tawa, so that roti is cooked uniformly and not burnt. 😬

8. Tadda, Remove the roti from the tawa, grease it with butter or ghee and serve hot with gravy of your choice.

Tips :

  • Do not use non stick tawa as the roti will not stick to the tawa.
  • If the dough sticks to the rolling pin, dust the dough with very little wheat flour. Too much wheat flour will not let the roti stick to the tawa.
  • Make sure the tawa is hot before transferring the roti to the tawa.
